There is an increasing awareness that funds available in countries that are governed by sharia law (including countries in the Middle East and some in the Far East) are an important source of funds. However, the commercial law environment in most countries, especially with regard to taxation, does not appear to encourage investment by Islamic finance. This article provides a summary of principles and techniques of Islamic finance, and discusses the current landscape in Australia and the United Kingdom regarding Islamic finance.
