The Madeira Free Trade Zone: Compliance and Control Issues

This article examines the evolution and current state of the Madeira Free Trade Zone and, in particular, its international services centre. The author provides critical comments on problems in administering and monitoring the scheme and on the use of offshore regimes as a tool for the development of Europe’s peripheral regions.
