VAT/GST versus MySST: Different Yet Similar

Malaysia repealed its goods and services tax (GST) (referred to as “MyGST”) and implemented sales tax and service tax (collectively known as “MySST”) on 1 September 2018. Over time, MySST has evolved by incorporating international best practices and expanding its tax base. In this article, the author examines the differences while focusing on similarities between value added tax (VAT)/GST (referred to as “VAT/GST”) and MySST by drawing insights from Singapore and the United Kingdom, as well as international guidelines from the OECD.
